Why are you favorit pickups Bartolini?-The sound, the price?
They were the only pickups I could find to fit right in my 5 string without modification, and they sound Great! Here is a short description-- 59J1 L1\LN1 59J1 L\S 57J1 L\S
These are split coil hum-cancelling designs. They have bright Neck tone and deep Bridge tone. These pickups are wound to yield much more "growl" from the Bridge pickup. They are very similar in tone to the old Bartolini 94J 4 string pickups, just ever so slighlty brighter at the bridge. Tonally, these have stronger lows and low mids than the typical "vintage" tone. --
I use the 57J1-L/S-Thanks for the question!

Here is a little info about Nordstrand Pickups--
Nordstrand NJ4SV/NJ4SE - 4 String J Pickup Set
NJ4SV
These are a split coil hum cancelling design. This pickup is designed to have a tone as close as possible to the NJ4 single coils. They have a similar clarity and bottom and have a good clean growl with the same interactive quality that all our alnico pickups are known to have.
Includes black covers (exposed pole pieces).
NJ4SE
These are a split coil humcancelling design. They use the same had wound pattern found on our NJ4's but with a finer wire called 43 gauge enamel. The natural character of this design is to have a more pronounced lower midrange, and a slightly muted high end. This makes them exceptionally suite to fingerstryle players that are going for a solo bridge pickup sound with good 'bark' and 'heft'. They are also totally humcancelling, and great for commonly noisy live situations.
Includes black covers (exposed pole pieces).

One pickup or Two?
The Gecko works well as a one or two pickup bass. You’ll want to choose your pickups to match your tone needs and playing style. Two pickups offer broad frequency response and a wider variety of tones, while a single pickups can deliver a more focused midrange sound and leave more room to dig in under the strings.
Active or Passive?
Most players prefer an active system for a 5- or 6- string bass to get the most out of the low B, and the Gecko is designed to accept a wide range of active electronics packages. Active pickups can deliver a more modern, brilliant tone, while passive pickups with an active preamp can give you a vintage vibe while retaining plenty of low-end punch.
For more information, see our Active vs. Passive FAQ.
Battery Clip
Special right-angle connectors for installing two batteries in
the Gecko battery compartment. Order two clips for 18-volt systems.

E.Q. or no E.Q?
Active and passive pickups can be used with a passive tone control that rolls off highs, or with an active EQ circuit that allows you to boost or cut frequencies. Passive tone controls give you a simplified control layout, while onboard EQ gives you more tone shaping flexibility.

EMG-MM TW
The “Twin” version of our Music Man Bass replacement is know as the MMTW. Based on our triple coil 89 Guitar Pickup the TW is two pickups in one, single-coil and dual-coil, and both are totally noiseless. The TW uses our popular ceramic and steel design for a nice transparent, not abusive high end along with a low-end that is just plain thunderous. Similar to our MM-CS the TW has wide spread bobbins (1 inch) combined with a large coil surface area that gives the EMG-TW a most amazing bass tone. The single coil pickup is the same as our Jazz Bass (J) Pickup, strong in mid-range. This is the perfect pickup if you’re planning on building a bass with only one pickup in the sweet spot. The MMTW comes with a push-pull pot that can be used as either a volume or tone control, or you can substitute a dpdt switch.
Package Includes: EMG's exclusive Quik-Connect™ cable, prewired solid shaft volume/tone control set, output jack, battery clip set, and adjustment screws.
EMG-HB
Originally known as the EMG-SS, the EMG-HB was developed for Steinberger Sound. It is a P-Style Pickup in a guitar humbucking housing. It has exactly the same features and specifications as the current EMG-P. It is recommended for bass guitars with a string width of less than 2 inches. The HB has been replaced with the 35 Extended Series Bass Pickups as a production equivalent.
Package Includes: EMG's exclusive Quik-Connect™ cable, prewired solid shaft volume/tone control set, output jack, battery clip set, and adjustment screws.
Hi, I have a Music Yo Toby Pro 5 bass, neck thru body, it originally came with these pickups :Neck Pickup: Custom-wound Tobias "SoapBar" style
Humbucker
Bridge Pickup: Custom-wound Tobias "SoapBar" style
Humbucker.
I wish to change these pickups for EMG 40's be it the P model or the DC ( i'm not quite decided yet possibly both i play in a metal band)
Unfortunately i don't have my bass with me ( I left it home in venezuela) so i was wondering if any of you knew the dimensions of said pickups and if it would be a direct replacement without further modifications, thanks a lot!
Thanks for the question, No EMG pickups are not a direct
replacement for your Toby pickups, and here is why-
Gibson-Tobias use a circuit board for the EQ_Preamp, EMG has all
of the circuit's built right in the pickup, that is why they
come prewired and need at least 9 volts usually 18 volts.
Your Toby5 has a good circuit in it already, if you changed it you
wouldn't notice much difference. Also the size of the pickup is not correct either.
You should leave it alone-Thanks
I have a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass w/preamp completely stock. I purchased the bass with the mid pickup not working (bridge pickup w/ preamp has great sound). I would like to make my bass whole at this point and replace the dead mid pickup (told it was dead by Guitar Center). I purchased a pair of used American Standard JB pickups and each has a different polarity rating...which pickup (7.66 or 7.42) installs in the mid position?...and can the replacement job be done by a musician with common sense? Thanks.
I don't think the standard pickup will work with the active eq, you can try it but I don't think so, also the pick ups are different lenghts, the one that fits in the pick up cavity is the one, if you have a bass that has two cavities the same size, use the one with the lowest resistance-Thanks
I have a question. is it possible to wire a passive PJ bass (godin freeway 4)with a Dimarzio dp-127 (double humbucking pbass p/up, I'd like to wire it in series), and a seymor duncan jazz hot stack (wired in series) in the bridge without a lot of noise? They are both supposed to be hum cancelling, but I am still getting a lot of buzz. I also have to use mini pots, due to the cavity size. It is 3 holes, drilled thru the body. The layout is currently V/V/Tone. Is it possible to do V/Blend/Tone? There is one ground wire, I believe it is going to the bridge. I could really use a schematic, if you could hook me up with one.... email me at tawcaw@hotmail.com if you can do this....
Thanks for the question, Usually hum canceling pickups work in pairs, from the same manufacturer, just because two pickups say they are hum canceling doesn't mean they work together, as far as a schematic, i will work on one but with all the missmatched parts i cant say how it will sound, thanks Sean
Just picked up a used Fender Zone Bass as a logical next step from my hot-rodded mid-70's P-bass to something that doesn't completely destroy my arthritic neck/shoulder by the end of back/back weekend gigs. Really like the feel/playability of this thing (after I did a setup to bring the action down), but the pickups are noisy (60HZ), especially the P's in the neck, but the J as well to some degree, and this has to be the deadest active setup I've ever plaid on, though I have been spoiled by me EMG's in the P-bass. Not knowing whether the preamp is in the pups (ala EMG) or in the little PC board in the cavity, I'm stuck trying to find the punchiest/growliest pups I can find (without breaking the bank and getting out wood chisels, etc). Can you educate me as to what/where fender has placed the functionality in this axe (is that board a preamp, or just serving the 3-band EQ?) and steer me toward a set of drop-in pups that will kill the hum and bring out the THUMP that I know is hiding someplace in this axe? Any help would be um...helpful! Thanks--Bill
I am guessing it is not an American Zone Bass
That pc board is kind of both,an eq and a preamp, Just find a nice set of Bartolini pickups and you are good to go
Hi, I am trying to decide on Ken Smith or Nordstrand soapbar pickups for a bass I am getting built, based on Ken Smith design and using Ken Smith hardware. Do you have any advice between the difference between the two brands? My gig bass is a Fender 72 tele-bass neck in a p-bass body, so am looking for something different. Really, I just want the best for this bass in terms of versatility and quality, I plan to use a Ken Smith 18V active pre amp, but have been really interested in what I have been reading about Nordstrand. Thanks!
Thanks for the question,You didn,t say what type of bass or pickup you plan on using, like a jazz style or humbucker or what-im guessing a jazz style,if so I too like the Nordstrand pickups-they are like a Bartolini pickup, wich I like very much here is a litle from Nordstrand-
Nordstrand NJ4SV
humbucking split coil 4 string jazz-type bass pickups
These are a split coil hum canceling design. This pickup is designed to have a tone as close as possible to the NJ4 single coils. They have a similar clarity and bottom, and have a good clean growl with the same interactive quality that all our alnico pickups are known to have. They are also totally humcancelling, and great for commonly noisy live situations
Im having a bass done by a luthier. I really like the Tobias Basic sound. Does anyone now wich pickups does a Tobias Basic have? I know they are bartolini but I dont now what exact model. Thanks!
My son plays a Fender Mustang Bass (Reissue) because he has small hands. He wants to get a nice slap tone and also more low end growl. I bought an EMG-P to replace the original Mustang pickup. I also bought an EMG-EXB tone control which is supposed to boost the lows and highs and scoop the mids.
I'm getting ready to try the mod, and I'm wondering about pickup/string spacing. The EMG is bigger than the Fender pickup. Will this be a problem (it looks like there will be string overlap)?
Well Howie,A small amount of string spacing overlap shouldnt matter to much as long as you can get the string height to compensate for the difference,That bass should sould sound very good with that set up,I had an old Mustang Bass myself, wish i had it now,Please let me know how this works out
hi there, i have a burns bison bass guitar and the pickups give just an amazing sound 'trisonic pickups', however i was wondering if you could help me figure out how to use the knobs on my guitar. There are a number of selections i can make (8 varietys in total) and these obviously alter the pickup selections, however i haven't a clue what they do. Any ideas
: I have a Samick/Brice 6 string that I'm playing a lot thru a 200 watt Traynor YBA200 tube head and SWR Goliath cabinet. Active pickups seem pretty good actually, but the tone controls/eq leave a LOT to be desired. What do you recommend as a tone control replacement (I have an EMG BTC control on my Fretless Precision, but that is on there with EMG pickups as well, and of course I like that set up a lot.) Should I go with other pickups and re-do the whole set up, or should I just change the eq controls and move on. Thanks for the advice.
Les in Ohio
Just change the controls-EMG's are great-Thanks-Also don't talk yourself out of it;)
is it possible to hook up an EMG EMG-MMTW Music Man Twin Active Bass Pickup with an aguilar pre-amp?
I just baught a schecter riot 5 . It does have a preamp but it has passive EMG pickups . Would I have to replace or add any other components other than just the active pickups ?
This is a good setup allready, but you can just change the pups, iwould get a Bartolinl set-they are great
